Interculturality is a fundamental element in the pedagogy of the school, from teachers to students, and also with guest participants and artists. The office for International relations coordinates the ensemble of international partnerships, in Europe and around the world, as well as the organization of student exchanges (a period of study or training elsewhere in 4th year).

The TALM Esba expands its international scope each year by developing numerous partnerships with foreign art schools and establishments.
The establishment itself offers a number of possibilities for study abroad. The exchange programmes are part of the standard student curriculum and are mainly geared towards fourth year students. A period of study in a foreign school demands that the student present the outline of their personal project to other teachers, other pedagogical and cultural milieus. The three school sites have signed bilateral Erasmus conventions for the mobility of their students and teachers and also maintain privileged partnerships with institutions located outside of Europe.

Master’s in comic art (with the University of Poitiers)

Cahiers du Post-diplôme “Contemporary Art and the Document”: each year, in the context of the post graduate programme, a group of documents relating to various research is published in the form of a review. Artists and the year’s guests (artists, producers, curators, theoreticians) from the programme participate in the publication.

Lectures, conferences, study trips, exhibitions and workshops.
The school took pride of place in the 2011 Rencontres Henri Langlois, Poitiers.
Participation in a number of festivals.
Regular interaction with the FRAC of the Poitou-Charentes region, the theaters of Angoulême and Poitiers (national stages), the Museum Council of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the National Conservatory of the region, Conferences with the Universities of Poitier and La Rochelle, exhibitions and prizes as part of the International Festival of Comic Strip art (Angoulême), relationships with the Maison des auteurs (Angoulême) and the Espace Mendès-France and the Confort moderne (Poitiers).
Various research and creative projects through conventions with different French and foreign institutions (including the scientific council of the European Commission’s Visual Arts Delegation).

Postgraduate research-creation residencies

In the context of the professionalisation of students, the ÉESI wished to open art residencies abroad to the graduates of June 2018.The implementation of a research-creation scholarship programme within the ÉESI is the result of a common finding in the major French art schools, namely the difficulty that most young artists have to develop their creative work, to show their work to the public and more broadly to get in contact with art professionals. For this first edition, three destinations have been selected thus giving the opportunity to three selected graduates, one by destination, to experience a first art residency abroad for a duration of 3 months in Fall 2018. The residencies were chosen for the quality of their activities and their location in line with the artistic orientations of the ÉESI:

– La Cúpula, multidisciplinary art center in Mérida, Mexico, in partnership with the Yucatán School of Fine Arts (ESAY)
– InterAccess, non-profit gallery, educationalfacility, production studio, and festival dedicated to emerging practices in art and technology located in Toronto, Canada
– Can Serrat, artistic residency in El Bruc, Catalonia, which brings togetheran international community of visual artists, writers and musicians who share,mix, coexist and create in a common space.

International openness is one of the priorities of the school strategy. Mobility is a flagship project which is developed in the long term and tends to structure pedagogy more and more.

This international openness, based on the evaluation of existing partnerships as well as on the prospection of new exchange partners, makes it possible to send students, teachers and non-teaching staff abroad and, conversely, to welcome students and art professionals within the school.

“Scenes of excellence” are favored for all these exchanges. Indeed, according to each practice taught at the school, there are reference places most often located in cities with a particularly dynamic artistic scene.

As part of their Master’s programme, all fourth-year students are going abroad for a semester. Their destination is chosen based on the criteria stated above and according to their personal projects.

The school keeps abreast of the state of creation on the different continents, currently with a predominance of Europe, North America and Asia.

New partnerships are being established with structures located in South America (Argentina, Mexico, etc.) and on the African continent (Senegal in particular).

The École nationale supérieure de la photographie diploma, a Master’s degree level award, offers three years of study combining solid theoretical knowledge and in-depth technical training in image-based media and contemporary theoretical debates.

It prepares young artists or researchers to start their working life in professions including artist-photographer, video artist, retoucher or image technician, as well as the possibility to move into the fields of exhibition management and publishing.

The Masters degree is open from Bac + 2 level (or equivalent), by entrance examination.
The age limit for applications is 30 years.

On finishing their Master’s degree, graduates are supported by the ENSP for the first three years of their professional life, in particular through continued access to school facilities. A dedicated website offers an overview of their work and their ongoing activities : alumni.ensp-arles.fr

PhD IN CREATION

The ENSP has offered the “Practice and theory of artistic and literary creation” PhD since 2013, in conjunction with Aix-Marseille University (AMU). This multidisciplinary project aims to allow PhD students to develop a research project in photography and to combine theoretical and epistemological reflection with their artistic practice.

The PhD is taught at the ENSP and at AMU over 3 years. During the thesis period, PhD students with a photography specialty are co-supervised by an artistic director and by an academic director, professor of rank A, holder of the ‘Competence to direct research’ (HDR) attached to one of the eight research units of AMU (ED 354).

Candidates must have held a Master 2 diploma (or the equivalent) for more than two years and be able to demonstrate research ability in their previous work. Overseas candidates must provide a certificate of competency in the French language at C1 level (issued by an appropriate French institution or cultural centre).
During the research period, the PhD student is autonomous in the conduct of his/her/their research but is in regular contact with his/her/their co-supervisors. He/she/they are also involved in the research activities of their co-supervisors and benefit from the resources and equipment available at the ENSP.

PhD supervision includes 6 doctoral seminars per year for which the guests are chosen by the PhD students and the teaching team according to their research work and centres of interest. PhD students have had the opportunity to present their work to personalities with varied experiences and practices, such as Arnaud Claass and Marielle Macé in 2021, Max Pinckers, Arno Gisinger, Véra Léon, Nathalie Voarino and Alexis Guiller in 2020.

Mentorship Programme

Edition 2021 | Archive and image review

With 40 years of experience in education in image making and theory, the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in the heart of Arles, the emblematic French city of photography, is launching its first international mentorship programme.

The programme is aimed at artist photographers with a professional practice, consolidated over several years, wishing to benefit from in-depth support for their artistic approach.

Starting from a review of your professional career and your artistic practice, you will be guided in giving a new direction to your creative projects, to look at them with a critical eye, to develop their implementation, and to strengthen your technical skills and your knowledge of the world of art and photography.

This individual and group work is led by Gilles Saussier, artist photographer and teacher at the ENSP, with the support of various guests throughout the programme.

This first edition, which will be held in French and English from the 13th of September to the 26th of November 2021, will be punctuated by two Masterclasses led respectively by Susan Meiselas and Pierre Leguillon.

The theme of the 2021 Mentorship programme is Archive and image review.

Throughout the mentorship you will also have access to all of the school’s equipment and activities: digital and film laboratories, computer graphics, audiovisual and editing facilities, photographic studios, the Fablab, the library (with more than 30,000 references), conferences, talks etc.

The École nationale supérieure de la photographie has been able to offer the acquisition of the school diploma, a Master’s degree award, through a process of validation of prior experience (VAE) since 2007 when it established its own examination and validation centre.

The VAE validates the achievements of salaried, self-employed and/or voluntary professional experience with a view to acquiring a diploma, a professional certificate or a qualification from a list drawn up by the national joint employment commission of a professional branch, registered in the national directory of professional certifications (RNCP).

The VAE is thus a means of acquiring a certification in the same way as school and university paths, apprenticeships and further professional training. It has the same status as other methods of testing knowledge, skills and competences.

For almost 40 years, the École nationale supérieure de la photographie (ENSP), a public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, has been providing high-level teaching to train photographers, video artists and, more generally, image professionals.

The ENSP opened a continuing education centre in 2007 in order to offer training sessions to professionals in the image industry, artists and photography enthusiasts.

The teaching programme is based on a precise and complete apprenticeship in contemporary photography, combining technical rigour and theoretical reflection, in accordance with what has characterised the ENSP since its origin.

The Infra-mince review has been questioning images and thinking around images since 2005. Published by the École nationale supérieure de la photographie and Actes Sud (numbers 1 to 10) then with Filigranes éditions, the journal is constructed around research dossiers offering a space for reflection on the different forms that photography can take. Theoretical texts respond to sets of images. Portfolios developed by artists and photographers sit alongside the work and research of students and former students of the ENSP.

Courses for all

The ENSP offers courses in the discovery and/or the practice of photography, including technical and practical learning as well as historical and theoretical sessions, within the framework of the Photography courses for all on one Saturday a month from November to April. A restitution of the year’s work is programmed at the end of the courses.

The Photography for all courses are open to amateur or experienced photographers as well as to photography enthusiasts wishing to discover other facets of photographic creation. A regular practice of photography is however necessary.

Exhibitions, lectures, meetings with participating artists, research conferences, workshops, large workshop (collective productions with young artists), seminars, publishing.

The school is open to adults, in the form of non-degree students, who wish to improve their artistic, theoretical and practical knowledge, without the objective of a certification/ qualification. The programme proposed within as a free time activity, takes place over four years. It aims to present a general view of contemporary visual practices completed by a historical approach. The classes are organized during the day and in the evening, from October to June. The objective is to work with all of the professors of the teaching system in place with a rhythm of three classes per week. Each non-degree student participates in an admission interview and an assessment at the end of each year. Registration is possible from the open day for non-degree students (June) onwards.

The school encourages, within the framework of the curriculum, study trips, internships and stays abroad.
International internships encourage familiarity with profession milieus and their modes of production, in addition to the acquisition of specific know-how. Grants covering one semester are available to fourth year students, allowing them to participate in international internships or study in partner art schools.
For a number of years and on an international level, the EBABX has made a vast and ambitious cultural investment. Beyond classic student exchanges which follow a specific teaching programme offered by partner schools (by way of the Crepuq and Erasmus programmes), the school is particularly interested in developing overlapping experiences with certain foreign partner schools (Politecnico, Milan – the Marchons Marchons workshop, 2012 and VINI VINDI VINCI, 2013, the Academy of Cracow, California Institute of the Arts, EINA Barcelona, etc.).

– The Coalition for Reconstructive Utopia Dirt Expedition (CRUde):This project questions the use of space and its interpretation, with students from both institutions, one French, the other American (ENSA Bourges – UC Irvine). The first week is held during the period of June to July of 2011 at the UC Irvine Room Gallery in Wendover. Students of the Bourges ENSA are received by the American students from June 18th to June 30th, 2012 for a second conference. This project is run by Nathalie Magnan (professor at the Bourges ENSA) and Catherine Lord (professor at the UCI).
– Outland: A workshop for research and creation of radio fiction and sound work. The project brings together the ENSA of Limoges and the ENSA of Bourges and is run by Geneviève Vergé Beaudou, Marios Tériade Eleftheriadis and Jean-Michel Ponty. In 2012, Outland created a network of workshops “hors les murs” (beyond the walls) by organizing a study trip to Paris, followed by Thessalonica and Istanbul (from March 21st to March 31st, 2012)
– Grants available to students: students can avail of the possibility of a Mobi-Center and OFAJ grant

A large (200m2) exhibition gallery located on Caen campus that hosts exhibitions of school graduates in addition to other exhibitions by artists from outside of the school, programmed in the framework of cultural partnerships.

Technical workshops:
– Volume section: wood workshops; metal workshops, in which cutting and welding, folding, forging, casting are done; a resin and plastics workshop.
– Ceramics section: workshops allowing students to explore a multitude of ceramics techniques (molding, modeling, turning, casting, enameling and tin glazing, raku, stoneware, reduction and oxidized baking)
– Print section: engraving workshops in soft carving, xylography, aquatint, screen-printing workshops with a number of print tables; lithography and photolithography workshop.
– Publishing section: printer allowing wood-typography, lead typography, offset and digital.
– Photography section: film developing laboratory, black and white and color printing workshops, including one for large formats; a shooting studio; a digital photography workshop.
– Video section: video editing spaces, film studio equipped with a cyclo for embedding

– Computer and multimedia section: computer room for classes, digital workshops in typography, layout, multimedia, animation and virtual 3D.

Libraries: The libraries located on each of the two campuses of ésam Caen/Cherbourg provide up a fund of references and resources for visual and contemporary art from the 20th century to today, that is to say over 27,000 documents in printed form (monographs, exhibition catalogues, essays) audiovisual documents (CD-Audio, DVD, CD-Rom), periodicals (art reviews, French and international graphic design reviews).

Student workshops: workshops with an area of 100 and 200m2 allow each student to benefit from an adapted workspace within the school throughout the year so as to imagine and carry out their personal projects. The pedagogical exhibition spaces allow them to present their work in professional conditions during evaluations or when passing degrees.

The Ygrec is an exhibition space that opened in March of 2012, renewing the project of La Vitrine, established ten years previously by the ENSAPC. Ygrec is a space for research and interaction between Cergy and Paris, between a pedagogical and professional activity. Neither gallery nor art center the Ygrec positions itself as a possible third way dedicated to questioning and reinventing art practice. A permanent structure for the production and distribution of contemporary art, Ygrec accompanies emerging creation and develops audacious artistic projects. It is as much a place that exhibits productions, as a collective work space that makes them happen. It adapts and transforms according to the projects that it hosts: exhibition, performance, concert, projection, launching of publications…
A toolbox for the teachers and students participating in and initiating its activities, YGREC wishes to be a space for meetings and exchanges. The link between an artistic and pedagogical practice where one is re-imagined by the other.

The ESCAM is part of the ERASMUS Charter and partner to a number of higher education establishments in Belgium (Brussels), the Czech Republic (Ostrava), England (Oxford), Italy (Brescia), Germany (Regensburg), Greece (Salonica), Poland (Katowice), Portugal (Porto), Scotland (Aberdeen), Slovenia (Ljubljana), Spain (Biblao, Madrid) and Turkey (Istanbul, Isparta). It is also partner to higher education establishments in Canada (Montreal), USA (Norman) and Peru (Lima).
In the context of linguistic training, the school prepares students for a Degree in Language skills (DCL). Indexed on the grid of the Common European Reference Framework for languages, it displays a level of mastery of the english language. The idea is to favor student mobility, already strongly encouraged by conventions with foreign establishments, and to allow for a better integration into professional life.
Projects of an international dimension are also done in the context of pedagogy and research in the ESACM (research programmes at Marfa – USA – and in Benin, Landscape ARC in Benin and Istanbul, etc.).

The Grand Atelier – school gallery

Students work in group workshops which promote discussion and ongoing work in the school. They also have access to areas for experimenting with spatial installation of their research and work, and workshops associated with specific techniques and tools, including a photographic laboratory, print room, sculpture workshop, carpentry, printed art workshops, video and sound studios.

The school also has a Fablab – manufacturing laboratory – for developing practices and artistic projects, open to students from the school and to the general public. The ProtoLab is a place for sharing, discussing and experimenting, and has a 3D printer, a laser cutter and engraver, a Kinect, a cutting plotter, an embroidery machine, electronic and robotic equipment etc.

The school provides students with the main tools and consumables required for inductions and work carried out in the main artistic disciplines, so they can borrow cameras, use photographic apparatus and premises, recorders etc. to achieve their projects.

Territorial activity:
The ESCAM has signed framework agreements with the National Higher School of Architecture, The Regional Funds of Contemporary Art, The Center for Virtual Reality and the Auvergne University.
It has strong ties with cultural actors such as the Court Métrage festival, the Creux de l’Enfer Center for Art, that of Meymac and la Tôlerie, the Roger-Quilliot Art Museum and the Extenso association, the Lilas Association and its “Unit 9” artist residency.

//SPECIALISATION IN ART

The Art department accompanies young practitioners throughout their academic experience. Throughout the 5 years of study, they should develop a personal project of art research.

During the first two years, classes focus on essential practices (including drawing, sculpture, installation, sound, performance, image and video). The artists teaching at ENSA provide an interdisciplinary education which seeks to go beyond categories and disciplines so that each student can develop an original and independent project. The aim is to allow students to shape a complex artistic idea which they then implement.

In this sense, the school is a place of resource, experimentation and exchange where knowledge and practice are transmitted and where the student experiences are constructed in common. The wealth of these cultural perspectives affords our school’s graduates multiple professional choices. Students have access to a wide choice of traditional working techniques (such as wood, earth, metal, resin, thermoforming), in addition to the most recent technological resources (like graphic design, 3D, video, sound) and to a theoretical support to frame their contemporary knowledge in historical and multi-disciplinary perspectives. Throughout their studies, students are invited to events outside the school walls letting them be confronted with the reality of collective shows, an introduction to cross-disciplinary projects, to writing critical texts, to visiting construction sites, to encounters with visiting professionals, researchers or residents coming from a scientific background or some other realm. This exposure to diverse experiences makes this specialisation fertile ground for wide-ranging artistic practices.

ENSA Dijon likewise offers greater openness to the outside world, in particular the international stage thanks to its residency programmes and internships covering the USA to China without forgetting the African continent. Internationally renowned artists are increasingly invited by the school to offer students their unique testimony on the diversity of art scenes around the world.

SPECIALISATION IN DESIGN

A multi-faceted training open to what the world is becoming

• L2 and L3 preparation for Bachelor Diploma (DNA): general training in design project, conception and creation at all levels
• M1 and M2 preparation for Masters Diploma (DNSEP): on a topic freely chosen by the student with emphasis on the challenges posed by the world today: ecological transition (ecodesign, biodiversity, attentive to the living), inclusivity (democratic and participative, intergenerational solidarity, gender rights)

Art & Society Research Unit (RU)

Created in collaboration with the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (MSH) at the University of Burgundy, the research unit (RU) ‘Art & Society’ organises all research activities within ENSA Dijon.

With the centres of Pedagogy, Student Life and International Relations, it supplies the support, be it human, material, financial, technical, or institutional, that allows for putting into place research and works towards sharing, valuing and recognising research that takes place in art and design at the heart of the school.

Its members include all of the school’s teachers–artists, designers and theoreticians–who are engaged in research activities in parallel with their teaching duties and their individual and independent professional, artistic, design and theoretical practices. Research thus reflects the artistic media (design, drawing, painting, performance, photography, sound, video, volume, etc.) and forms of knowledge (art history, philosophy, aesthetics, cultural theory) practiced in the school.

Research in art schools: invention, experimentation, sharing

Although art and science–whether human and social sciences, formal sciences (logic, mathematics) and natural sciences (physics, biology, etc.) or engineering sciences–differ in their internal criteria and their own aims, they have never been alien to each other. Research is consubstantial with them, and both constitute activities that are based on the logic of experimentation and invention.

In the course of their history, art and science (and technology) have never ceased to be challenged or even provoked by each other: from geometry, physics or the theory of emotions, yesterday, to contemporary epistemologies stemming from environmental sciences (ecology), digital technologies and their anthropological stakes, such as those of gender studies and postcolonial approaches to theories of culture and domination.

Because the questioning of the forms of restitution of research belongs to the very process of research, and while today, in the scientific world, new forms of approaches and restitution of research are emerging (practice-based-research, etc.), the Research Unit “Research on the environment” is also concerned with the questioning of the forms of restitution of research. While relying on the established academic forms of sharing research results (colloquia, publications), the “Art and Society” Research Unit initiates, encourages and accompanies the invention of new, often hybrid, forms specific to art school research: exhibitions, devices, collective works, etc.

RESEARCH STRUCTURE

The research at the core of the research unit Art & Society is organised around two structural themes, transversal and multi-disciplinary. These axes, which are not mutually exclusive, allow for the identification the domains in which members of the RU situate their research activity.

Axis 1 – Materials,

mediA, intermedialities

This axis questions the relations of media to their own specificity (procedures, methods, histories) and their own identity, as well as to the types of alterities that question them (hybrid forms and translatability of languages; relation of learned forms / popular forms, new technologies; relation of art / culture; autonomy and heteronomy of art; questions around exhibitions).

Axis 2 – Crises,

contexts, combats

This axis addresses the question of art and design in light of their relations with knowledge and power, in as much as they interrogate practices and presentations of visibility and invisibility, eventually generators of violence. In that respect, artistic and design practices cross-reference forms of knowledge and militant practices (ecology, feminism). Hence this particular insistence on the question of inclusion, of place (urban spaces, rural worlds, the margins, migrations), and their contrary (non-places, uprooting etc).

At the core of both axes can be organised one-off events (publication, conferences, exhibition) or even research programmes on a larger scale.

Urban Mutations

The transdisciplinary research programme Urban Mutations is an extension of the Bachelor and Masters teaching delivered by the ENSA Dijon Design Option team (studio projects, classes, ARC, workshops). It brings together designers, architects, scenographers, landscape designers, artists and theoricians with all areas mixed up in communal space of thought and imagination, of proposition and urban experimentation strongly rooted in the ecological, political and social realities of cities in the anthropocene age.

Currently humanity is affected by an ecological crisis – pollution, dwindling natural resources, the destruction of ecosystems, the disappearance of biodiversity, climatic warming and disruption, proliferation of extreme episodes of drought and heatwaves – along with the economic, social and political consequences. These force us to radically rethink not only modes of production and consumption but also our way of living and especially living in a city, namely to produce and consume space and time. It questions our use of space and our daily choreographies.

Cities, particularly vulnerable to the effects of environmental crisis, are partly responsible for it. It means that cities can also be the place for local solutions to this global problem.

Design, for a long time confined to the sphere of marketing, today constitutes a collective open to thought, practices and mechanisms at the intersection of research and creation, working, with the same sensory perception (affordance), on the representations and uses of our environment, like vectors to transform urban space.

To think about and know a city as a completely separate ecosystem, to take care of the plant and animal biodiversity it shelters, to promote urban agriculture aimed at alimentary autonomy without endangering the environment, and more globally rethinking the relations between city/nature, that implies also thinking about the activities and socio-economic temporalities of a city. Like slow cities which are spreading all over the world, cities should also incorporate soft mobility (bicycles) and non-carbon ways of moving whose current growth is revealing.

Eco-design thinks about the environmental impact of the materials and forms it implements, extolling low-tech and DIY, self-help and reuse, in inspiring vernacular practices. This relation to the work of the material sustains a relation to space by its investment of zones left vacant or without quality by modernisation or economic crisis: industrial wastelands and urban interstices can be places of transitory urbanism where can be experimented other manners of living collectively in the city, and a parking lot or frontage becomes through a micro-intervention (urban acupuncture) spaces of urban tactics like so many gestures – light and joyous, temporary and festive –aiming to reconquer the streets.

Faced with the tendency to standardisation, functional uniformity, social homogeneity and in the end to the sterilisation of public privatised spaces increasingly devoted to commerce and to consumption under CCTV, it is necessary to imagine inventive forms to live in the city that are likely to revitalise it.

In addition, everywhere can be heard, increasingly loudly, the hopes of city dwellers for a renewed urban democracy – a right to the city – in which citizens, either with collaboration or participation, become actively implicated in projects implemented by private and/or public actors, concerning their living space, be it a street, place, neighbourhood, living place, or even a place which has not been assigned a function in advance and which is reinvented according to use.

The idea of a desirable city – where the notion of pleasure is not annexed to consumerism – because to be equal (open to all) requires in effect to take into account diversity and the unforeseeable uses and users, be it by age, gender or social and cultural origin. New urban design practices are nourished thus by the input of contemporary critical theories (feminist theories and gender criticism, post-colonial theories, care theories). The Urban Mutations programme follows in the wake of numerous multidisciplinary collectives reuniting urbanists, videomakers, designers, architects, philosophers, scenographers, sociologists and landscape architect (Bellastock, EXYZT, le Bruit du frigo, Encore heureux) with whom they will regularly work.

Experimentation in situ, workshops, conferences, publications – including original translations of inescapable Anglo-Saxon authors – will make up the research activities of this programme.

To de-focus the viewpoint and deepen the explorations, the Urban Mutations programme draws on the partnership between ENSA Dijon and the School of Art and Design of the Technical University of Hubei in Wuhan, China, by putting in place cross-worshops.

Programme Nouveaux Commanditaires

Co-headed by: two “historic” mediators of la Société de Nouveaux Commanditaires, this  research axis aims to experiment  with the process of unique mediation that Nouveaux Commanditaires protocol set in operation

How to support citizens, committed and confronted with social issues or developing a territory, by involving artists and researchers in their thinking?

Through the implementation of a series of situations (what is often called workshops or collaborative working), we seek to define the procedures at work: How is a focus group formed? How does it work? How does it make decisions, who should be met to share its preoccupations, its knowledge? What link does this group have with authority, history, legitimacy, money, or art?

These situations unite researchers, artists, students, teachers, mediators and representatives from civic society. In the image of a NC group and thanks to its homogenous character, it is a question of inventing circumstances that will allow members to work together, on equal footing.

These situations will be arranged throughout the year around topics which will be debated together, in the framework of a mediation office formed at the year’s start.

Painting and Colour

Starting out as a drawing school, ENSA Dijon has developed at its core a research programme centred on current painting practices.

This programme follows in the wake of teaching delivered to Bachelor and Masters students (theory and workshops, ARC and workshops). It draws on the spaces and structures that the school have devoted to painting and colour: The Painting Workshop, the European Colour Observatory (ECO), which maps the relation between scientific theory of colour and contemporary artistic practices.

Closely linking historical review, theoretical expression and experimental practice, the activities of the research programme “Painting and Colour” is open and multi-form: invitations of international artists in the presence of one of their works (Olivier Mosset, Pierre Mabille, Eva Nielsen, Philippe Mayaux and Yan-Pei Ming), talks and theory classes on the historical and current context of painting (Michèle Martel and Bernard Marcadé), workshops with invited artists (Amélie Bertrand, Christopher Cuzin or Elodie Boutry), student exhibitions in professional art venues.

The International : At the heart of Ensa’s strategy

At ENSA Dijon, the international inhabits every aspect of the life of this school. Far from being simply a topic in itself, it is rather a way of being, of thinking and of approaching the world and our professions. This approach can be found as much in our regular curriculum as in the internships carried out in the 4th year, workshops, Research and Creation workshops, and particularly in the residence programmes and preparation for professional life that ENSA has proposed to our recent artist graduates since 2015.

International study

ENSA Dijon prioritizes foreign travel by encouraging its students to go abroad during their studies and by welcoming foreign students each year. Furthermore, many foreign visitors (artists and professionals) have been invited to participate in research at ENSA as part of the Research and Creation workshops, workshops, talks and study days all thanks to the Art & Society Research Unit. Study trips abroad have also been scheduled, as well as residency programmes and preparation for professional life that the school offers to recent graduates.

STUDY ABROAD AND INTERNSHIP

Our students have the possibility of experiencing another country in the first semester of the 4th year, either :

By studying for a semester in Europe with Erasmus+ or further afield
Or by completing a professional internship (in museums, galleries, artists’ studios), which students are assisted in finding.

The Erasmus+ grant (semester in the EU) : approx. €250/month
Dynastage and Aquisis grants from the Burgundy-Franche-Comté Region : approx. €250/month
ENSA grant (semester outside the EU) : approx. €500/month
International Mobility grant from the Ministry of Culture (if receiving a univeristy study grant from the Ministry of Culture according to social need) : approx. €400/month
Students receiving financial assistance based on social need set by CROUS can continue to receive it during their stay abroad.

MOBILITY COMMITTEE

During the first semester of the 4th year, all students must complete a study period at a school or university abroad, or an internship in a company or with an artist in France or abroad.  With this in mind, third year students should present a coherent mobility project to the mobility committee for examination.  This committee is generally made up of the third year coordinator, the head of international relations and a language teacher.

Each student must appear before the mobility committee regardless of the nature of their project. Their presence does not result in a mark or the granting of credits. Each student is allocated 15 minutes to present their study project abroad or internship in France or abroad.

The student must give the mobility committee a 15-page dossier (in French and English) of their project including: an outline of the project and motivation behind the choice of destination, school or company (approx. 1 page);
a portfolio of their current work and main references (approx. 10 pages); a curriculum vitae (approx. 1 page);
The committee will study the presented project (desired destination, school or company) and approve or otherwise the mobility project. The committee will examine the presented project for the purpose of allocating mobility grants, in particular the Erasmus+ grant, in view of the global amount attributed to ENSA Dijon by the European agency.

Furthermore, ENSA Dijon would like to draw the students’ attention to languages and in particular certain foreign institutions requiring a B2 level of a foreign language, certified by a linguistic test (IELTS, TOEIC or TOEFL for English).

Obtaining Credits

It is compulsory for all students who spend a semester as part of the Erasmus+ scheme to validate their ECTS credits within the host institute.  On their return they must hand in documentation showing proof of these ECTS credits to the Secretary of Pedagogy in order to validate their semester.

Upon their arrival at ENSA Dijon, foreign students are expected to complete a study contract stipulating the courses they will take during the semester (up to 30 credits).  They can choose from among the different technical and practical workshops and classes offered by the school.  This contract will be the basis for drawing up their individual evaluation sheet.  They will sit an end-of-semester evaluation to validate their ECTS credits.  A document providing proof of these credits will be issued to them in order to validate their semester with their home school.

PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ABROAD

Upon receiving their Masters Degree (DNSEP), young artists and designers, who recently graduated, are eligible to apply for one of the programmes of international residency and exhibition created by ENSA Dijon, right from the beginning of their professional life.  These programmes aim to develop their professional networks and help them start their careers under the best conditions.

Art Option DIJON/SAO PAULO (BRAZIL)

Since 2018, students currently in their 5th year and DNSEP level 1-2-3 at ENSA Dijon, as well as those from the School of Communication and Art (ECA) of the University of Sao Paulo (USP) have been invited to apply for this programme, which offers:

4-6 week residence in Sao Paulo and an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) of the University of Sao Paolo for the French awardee; 4-6 week residence in Dijon and an exhibition in a Dijon museum for the Brazilian awardee.
The School of Communication and Art (ECA) of the University of Sao Paulo (USP) and ENSA Dijon will each select their candidate. An internal jury, presided over by the Director, will choose the successful French candidate.

The chosen artist will receive a €3000 grant from ENSA to cover the cost of the flight, accommodation and food. The young artist chosen in Brazil is subject to the same conditions.

To be selected, the candidates will respond to the call for applications (February-March) by sending a CV, an outline of intention specifying their motivation for this residence, and a book presenting their work in English and French.

CITE INTERNATIONAL DES ARTS RESIDENCY

In 2020, ENSA Dijon clinched a partnership with the Cité international des arts to offer a residency programme for one young artist at the Cité International des arts. Young artists having receiving their Masters (DNSEP) and students currently in DNSEP level 1-2-3 at ENSA Dijon are eligible to apply for this programme, which offers the awardee a 2-month residency (lodging and workshop) at the Cité international des arts.

The Grenoble -Valence ÉSAD regularly publishes artists’ books, catalogues, CD Roms…

The Grenoble ÉSAD organizes workshops with guest artists, critics, writers and designers in addition to study trips in France and abroad. It regularly programmes seminars, lectures and presentations of work of all types (exhibitions, performances, concerts, projections,…) and actively collaborates with the cultural structures of the Grenoble conglomeration and its region in the organization of events. These events, whose initial purpose is one of pedagogy, are opportunities to further anchor the school in the professional network of contemporary art and to open it out to the population of the City of Grenoble and the region.
The Grenoble -Valence ÉSAD is part of the network formed by the four higher schools of art in the Rhone-Alpes region. In this capacity it favors inter-school pedagogical projects and the professional insertion of its graduates

Classes for children, adolescents and adults: an introduction to visual arts, drawing, painting, sculpture, engraving, watercolor, illustration, photography, volume-installation, history of art.

In the framework of the organization of studies, the eighth semester is dedicated to international mobility. Each student is invited to travel abroad and face the demands of the world through either a study trip, or an internship in a professional structure.
The Grenoble ÉSAD participates in the ERASMUS programme. Numerous partnerships with international higher educational establishments have been set up. Financial support is provided to students through different grants and scholarships: Erasmus, Explo’ra sup from the Rhone-Alpes region and OFAJ -the Franco-German youth office.

The Grenoble ÉSAD avails of two exhibition spaces: the Gallery of the Grenoble ÉSAD and the Xavier Jouvin Gallery (48 quai Xavier Jouvin, 38000 Grenoble) regularly present multidisciplinary projects from students and young artists.

The Grenoble ÉSAD has a range of adapted technical workshops: it possesses a complete set up when it comes to traditional techniques (drawing, painting, film photography, offset printing, plaster, earth, wood, metal), and also more recent techniques (digital technology applied to photography, video, sound, multimedia, CAD).
The Grenoble ÉSAD also has an amphitheater equipped for lectures and projections and a specialized library.

The TALM Esba expands its international scope each year by developing numerous partnerships with foreign art schools and establishments. The establishment itself offers a number of possibilities for study abroad. The exchange programmes are part of the standard student curriculum and are mainly geared towards fourth year students. A period of study in a foreign school demands that the student present the outline of their personal project to other teachers, other pedagogical and cultural milieus. The three school sites have signed bilateral Erasmus conventions for the mobility of their students and teachers and also maintain privileged partnerships with institutions located outside of Europe.

The Limoges ENSA develops unique pedagogical and research partnerships connected to contemporary ceramics in the fields of art and design in the context of the UNIC (Urban network for innovation in ceramic) and ECART (European ceramic art and research team) european networks, and in the context of the international studio for research and creation of the ENSA in the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute, ancient imperial capital of porcelain (China).

TRAVEL AND TRIPS
The school organizes regular trips or study trips for students (Venice Art Biennale, Documenta in Kassel). Every year, during the first semester, a trip to Paris is offered to students of the 1st year, with a program of visits (museums, art centers, galleries, etc.)

SEMINARS AND DAYS OF STUDIES
The teaching team of the Lorient site offers seminars or study days, with the participation of external guests (artists, teachers, researchers from all disciplines):
× Either on joint projects with other EESAB sites.
× Either in connection with the project to set up the Lorient site. Every year since 2012, the study days “L’expérience du récit” are an opportunity to invite theorists and artists to share their experiments or analyzes around this notion of narrative, the foundation of the pedagogical project. These days give rise to an eponymous annual publication.

EXHIBITIONS
The gallery of the school hosts on average 3 exhibitions per year. Artists, collectives or gallery owners, in conjunction with the teachers, propose a selection of works and travel to meet the students, to animate a conference or a workshop related to the exhibition. This program includes exhibitions linked to the biennals organized in the Lorient conurbation, the “Rencontres photographiques” and the “Itineraires graphiques” co-founded by the school.
The school encourages partnerships to allow students to expose as much as possible outside the walls.

Through the Erasmus network, exchange agreements signed with many european countries.

– Le Réfectoire (The Refectory):
The Refectoire is the school gallery of the National Higher School of Fine Arts, Lyon. A space of exhibition, experimentation, learning and transmission, the Réfectoire affirms its particular situation within an art school, by approaching, as much in its functioning as in its events, certain aspects of the modalities of work and issues at work in a school of art. The Réfectoire is a place of artistic and curatorial exercise.
Two other places are dedicated to the presentation of students’ work:

– The test Gallery on the 3rd floor

The ESADMM edits publications in relation to certain pedagogical and artistic projects, to activities of research and expression carried out in the school. The degrees awarded (DNSEP art and design) are the subject of a catalogue each year. The school also publishes the ensemble of its pedagogical leaflets. A publishing section exists within the school (technical basics in Publishing/ prepress/ archives, screen printing, lithography/ offset/ engraving, infography) allowing students to shape, experiment and make multiple works of very diverse natures, from the creation of artist books to school dissertations (mémoires).

Each year the ESADMM elaborates a complete programme of cultural activities within the school in addition to projects that happen outside the walls in relation with its partners: exhibitions, lectures and encounters, concerts, open days, workshops and guests, artist residences, etc.

With classes geared towards amateurs, both children and adults, more than 600 students practice the visual arts each week in workshops situated on 6 sites from the north to the south of the city. Driven by visual artists, teachers from the school, the originality of the workshops resides in the double approach proposed by teachers: practice the visual arts, but also develop an aesthetic sensitivity, allowing each student to inscribe their creative process in the modernity of the arts. As a complement, developing a general sensitivity to the History of art is proposed.

The school is committed to displaying a true international policy. Of course this is supported by the establishment’s first class student exchange network with almost 50 art and design schools around the world.

The MAD, the gallery of the École supérieure d’art et de design Marseille-Méditerranée.
The MAD gallery in the center of town has the primary goal of bringing visibility to the school’s art options, revealed by guest artists, the choice of participants made by teachers, the event-related pedagogical forms, workshops, studios and the school’s research axes.

THE LUMINY GALLERIES
Located on the site of the establishments, two experimental exhibition spaces are available to invited artists, student and teacher projects and public renderings of work at the end of workshops.

The ESADMM benefits from a privileged environment at the heart of Luminy’s university domain. It covers 18 hectares, in buildings whose architecture was designed by René Egger offering 10,000m2 of workshops, classrooms and an amphitheater, privileging volume and light to students.
The school has the technological basis that covers the ensemble of the tools necessary for creation today: infography, wood, metal, publishing (screen printing, lithography, engraving…), still and moving digital images, sound, ceramics, 3D, modeling…
It has also implemented a large digital project (LoAD platform and fablabs) designed to create thinking and experimentation, inside and outside of the school, on the wide field of digital practices, linking engineering, research, technology, creation and distribution.

Foreign students from the EU who would like to complete an entire ÉSAL course programme may integrate the school in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th academic year. Overseas Internships
Though they mainly take place during the fourth year, internships (taking place in the summer) are possible all throughout the curriculum.

Grants and scholarships
Erasmus : 160 €/month for studies and 350 €/month for an internship
The Boussole Grant of the Alsace Region: studies or internships, for a duration of 12 to 35 weeks.
A number of destinations, such as Germany and towns twinned with Strasbourg (Stuttgart, Dresden, Leicester, Boston and Ramat-Gan), giving rise to specific grants.

Postgraduate programmes, overseas residencies
The Department for International Relations accompanies students for different opportunities and assists them in administrative processes after obtaining a DNSEP/Master’s degree.

French as a foreign language
Foreign students wishing to improve their French language skills (written and spoken) have the possibility to follow classes in French as a foreign language with a rhythm of 1 and a half hours per week.

The school has developed a publishing and co-publishing programme and regularly publishes exhibition catalogues, works of art and research (5 publications or co-publications in 2011).

Exhibition programme: 5 to 6 exhibitions per year in the NaMiMa Gallery and 5 or 6 exhibitions per year in partner spaces, Espace My Monkey, André Malraux Cultural Center, national stage, Museum of Fine Arts, Aquarium Museum…

Active participation in European Union student and teacher exchange programmes (Erasmus/Socrates)

In 2011, the school created its own exhibition gallery, NaMiMa, a 120m2 space dedicated to experimentation and practices of the exhibition. NaMiMa is an acronym taken from Nano/Micro/Macro. It places the accent on relationships of scale, movement, space and time. To move from micro to macro, is to shift from the individual to the collective, from the restricted to the global. A fundamental issue to be faced with within an art school.
The gallery privileges work done in a laboratory logic with young curators, young French and international artists with some coming from the ARTEM studios. It presents three or four exhibitions per year, one of them being the result of an international call for projects launched towards young creators, artists and collectives operating in the field of research being interested in emerging forms.

Wood, metal, casting-modeling, typography, engraving, screen printing, lithography, reprography, offset, film and digital photography (a shooting studio and two laboratories for the treatment of black and white and color photographs), CAD and CAO, multimedia (film studio, editing booths, post-production and mastering equipment), video, sound, prototyping.

Production

The school has a very strong editorial policy. It has published several research books and numerous catalogs of graduates.

Evening classes for adults and children’s classes.

Every year, Nîmes Art School (Esban) welcomes students from abroad. Foreign students may apply to study at Esban either as regular students (after passing the entrance exam or the mid-course admission) or as exchange students coming from a partner institution and staying for a semester or one academic year.

The Esban hosts in its main building a Gallery of 280m2. It allows the school to organize three or four exhibitions a year. This very solemn space can also be used by the students for their final exam.

Five 200m2 collective studios are reserved for students, allowing them to develop their personal projects and individual research.Publishing practises can avail of specific, well equipped workshops and the volume workshops are organised with tools and machines that allow students to work with wood and metal as well as perform modelling and casting.Three computer rooms (CAD, Video/Sound) and a photography laboratory are available to students who wish to work with images and sound.
The Esban also possesses a library that specialises in contemporary art, being part of the network formed by the centre for documentation of the Carré d’Art and that of the FRAC Languedoc-Roussillon.

The ENSCI-Les Ateliers publishes articles and texts on its web site including reports, interviews, points of view, dissertations and degrees. It publishes articles, as with the annual degree year book and exhibition catalogues. Under the Paris Design Lab brand it also publishes its research and experimentation notes.

The regular presence of national and international events in the establishment.
Lectures, debates, conferences, performances on a monthly basis, initiated by the video-photo-sound studio.
Participation in international student design competitions (students from the ENSCI are regularly among the prize winners).

Each student has a mandatory professional internship lasting one term, in France or, for over half of them, abroad, and a large number of students travel to Europe or abroad for a university exchange.
The establishment currently has almost 80 partner schools and universities throughout the world. Three of them are considered to be footholds: Chiba University in Japan, The National University of Singapore in Singapore and Parsons, The New School for Design in New-York.
The MEDs (Master of European Design), organized with six other European institutes, allows a wide opening on Europe for students following this curriculum.

The école supérieure d’art des Pyrénées — Pau Tarbes is naturally turned towards the iberian peninsula. Numerous student and teacher exchanges have resulted from this proximity. However, connections woven with other countries also enhance the proposed pedagogy. Each year the school increases its international reputation through the development of numerous partnerships with foreign art schools and institutions.
The Pyrénées ÉSA sends and receives term students to and from England and Belgium.

Master’s in comic art (with the University of Poitiers)

Cahiers du Post-diplôme « Document et Art contemporain » : each year, the postgraduate programme publishes an ensemble of documents relating to the different research being done in the form of a review. Artists from the programme and the year’s guests (artists, producers, curators, theoreticians) participate in the publication.
Pratiquer : a collection created and directed by Sabrina Grassi-Fossier of artists, authors and theoreticians writing on their work.

Lectures, conferences, study trips, exhibitions and workshops.
The school was featured in the 2011 Rencontres Henri Langlois in Poitiers.
Participation in numerous festivals.
Regular relationships with the Poitou-Charentes FRAC, the theaters of Angoulême and Poitiers (national stages), The council of the museums of Poitou-Charentes, The National Conservatory of the region. Conferences with the universities of Poitiers and La Rochelle; exhibitions and prizes in the context of the International festival of Comic Strip art (Angoulême); relationships with the Maison des auteurs (Angoulême) and the Espace Mendès-France and the Confort moderne (Poitiers).
Realization of projects of research and creation under contract with the various French and foreign institutions (including the scientific council of the Delegation for the Visual Arts of the European Commission).

Postgraduate research-creation residencies

In the context of the professionalisation of students, the ÉESI wished to open art residencies abroad to the graduates of June 2018.The implementation of a research-creation scholarship programme within the ÉESI is the result of a common finding in the major French art schools, namely the difficulty that most young artists have to develop their creative work, to show their work to the public and more broadly to get in contact with art professionals. For this first edition, three destinations have been selected thus giving the opportunity to three selected graduates, one by destination, to experience a first art residency abroad for a duration of 3 months in Fall 2018. The residencies were chosen for the quality of their activities and their location in line with the artistic orientations of the ÉESI:

– La Cúpula, multidisciplinary art center in Mérida, Mexico, in partnership with the Yucatán School of Fine Arts (ESAY)
– InterAccess, non-profit gallery, educationalfacility, production studio, and festival dedicated to emerging practices in art and technology located in Toronto, Canada
– Can Serrat, artistic residency in El Bruc, Catalonia, which brings togetheran international community of visual artists, writers and musicians who share,mix, coexist and create in a common space.

International openness is one of the priorities of the school strategy. Mobility is a flagship project which is developed in the long term and tends to structure pedagogy more and more.

This international openness, based on the evaluation of existing partnerships as well as on the prospection of new exchange partners, makes it possible to send students, teachers and non-teaching staff abroad and, conversely, to welcome students and art professionals within the school.

“Scenes of excellence” are favored for all these exchanges. Indeed, according to each practice taught at the school, there are reference places most often located in cities with a particularly dynamic artistic scene.

As part of their Master’s programme, all fourth-year students are going abroad for a semester. Their destination is chosen based on the criteria stated above and according to their personal projects.

The school keeps abreast of the state of creation on the different continents, currently with a predominance of Europe, North America and Asia.

New partnerships are being established with structures located in South America (Argentina, Mexico, etc.) and on the African continent (Senegal in particular).
