In order to share its creations and to produce meaning through an assertive editorial approach, isdaT formed a publishing house in 2022. This choice follows a long editorial history. Between research works, creative works and works to promote its heritage collections, isdaT editions offers several collections that are faithful to its missions. Two were launched in 2022 to inaugurate this initiative: the Formes collection and the Recherche collection.

Located in the heart of Toulouse, quai de la Daurade, isdaT offers, in addition to its higher education programmes, public courses and internships open to all. Whether as a beginner or for those wishing to improve their skills, they allow attendees to acquire and develop their graphic arts practice.

The adult courses offered by isdaT introduce you to the techniques of drawing and painting. Through observation and interpretation exercises, and by experimenting with tools, materials and technique, the aim is to acquire a technical and formal basis of these mediums. Graphic arts issues are placed in the historical and contemporary context of art in the form of art history courses, visits to museums and exhibitions. The goal is to allow everyone to engage in a personal, original, entirely different approach and to understand the artistic trends of the 20th century up to the most recent developments. Certain individual projects can, if necessary, be carried out from time to time in the institute’s technical workshops: engraving, screen printing, photography.

Classes for children and adolescents, aged 7 to 17, are a workshop designed to explore different creative techniques. After having acquired the basic knowledge, everyone progresses at their own pace and are able to freely chooses what project to work on. This experience is a real workshop approach that makes children or teenagers want to go further in the discovery of the practice of drawing, painting or graphic art techniques. Teaching is done by age group.

Through its vast network of partnerships, the institute has fostered a tradition of mobility programmes which students are encouraged to explore in the form of study visits or work placements.

These stays are carried out either in the 2nd and 4th year of studies. Scholarship students may receive support to study at the partner institutions or to undertake a work placement. Each year, the isdaT welcomes a large number of international students in addition to those enrolled in the courses.

Students will benefit from the building of presentation and experimental spaces as well as setting up exhibition spaces for guest artists. Meeting places with the public, the programming of exhibitions and events aims to establish a connection between students and the outside world, between the institute and the city, between professional environment and artistic emergence. The participation in the assembly of the exhibitions of guest artists is an integral part of the educational programme addressed to students.

The exhibition spaces are an integral part of the institute:

• Room 02 (180 m2),
• The Galerie du Quai (90 m2 + 15 m2) offers a hanging room and a projection space,
• The Palais des Arts (300 m2), an interface between the city and the school, allows students to present their work and plan large-scale exhibitions,
• Mur, an experimental space for students of the institute. Galerie d’essai, intended to house the work and research of students. Given the configuration of Mur, located upstream from the Palais des Arts, the works presented relate to publishing, repetition, imagery or collector’s items. Its monthly programme is made up of projects by students,
• The library corridor (30m2) is used to host corridor exhibitions bringing together heritage endowments and the modern and contemporary library collection for the purpose of enhancing the documents and works of the isdaT.

Technical workshops

• Volume : composed of five volume workshops : Modelling and moulding, Metalwork, Wood, Model-making and Machina.
• Materials library : introduce students to a research interest and methodology in order to use their acquired knowledge about materials in their own projects.
• Painting : a space where students can develop, experiment and try out different mediums in order to perfect their technique.
• Publishing : composed of three workshops : Publishing and images (stamping, engraving, digital printing), Screen printing and Small print publishing.
• Photography : which brings together three complementary spaces : the shooting studio, the silver photography laboratory and the digital photography laboratory.
• Digital : Several workshops teach learning digital tools: digital drawing and shapes, graphic design and 3D workshop & computer-assisted drawing.
• Sound : an introduction to listening, the use of recording techniques and sound processing as well as support for projects within the framework of research.
• Video : structured around three research fields : Images both real and imaginary, Images of reality and Projection(s).
• Web : supports artistic projects related to the Internet or which use its potential (aesthetic, social, narrative, political).

Resource areas

• Library : the library (modern collection and audiovisual collection) is an educational space. A space for dialogue between students, teachers and staff who support their research.
• Heritage collection : consists of the old collection, the art collection and the archives.
• Lending library : the lending library consists of 1345 items and includes small tools, portable devices, wiring panels, cameras, digital recorders, camcorders, overhead projectors, computers, video projectors, TV screens, etc.

Media platform

The isdaT media platform is a common space for creation and dissemination, housed in the heritage library (the old collection). Designed in the 19th century as a place for public performance and meetings, the building had for several years been reserved for conservation and consultation with regards to heritage funds. While it retains its function as a classroom space and an old library, it has become a new space for debates, conferences, screenings, performances and concerts open to the public. A tool for disseminating creation, the media platform is also an educational project: isdaT students participated in its design and layout and are in charge of audio-visual recording and live editing of any events that are programmed there.

Together with the educational training programmes in the fields of art, design, graphic design, music and dance, as well as with the cooperation of its partners, isdaT offers a varied programme within the media platform for all audiences.

Higher education and training

The isdaT is a member of the ANdÉA (Association nationale des écoles supérieures d’art et design publiques) and the anescas (Association nationale d’établissements d’enseignement supérieur de la création artistique arts de la scène).

The isdaT collaborates with higher education establishments for the implementation of educational projects, in particular with the INSA (Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Toulouse), the ENSA (École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Toulouse), the Lycée Dorian in Paris, etc.

Artistic and cultural sector

The isdaT is a member of professional networks within which it participates in discussions on artistic research, cultural dissemination and support for young creation (réseau Peinture, PinkPong, Air de midi); the isdaT is also in partnership with Les Abattoirs – FRAC Occitanie Toulouse, the Nouveau Printemps, the Musée des Augustins, Lieu-Commun — Artist run space à Toulouse, the MO.CO. Montpellier Contemporain Esba, the Conservatoire Musique et Danse de la Ville de Montauban, the CRAC Occitanie…), offering both students and graduates the opportunity to engage in professional situations in regularly changing contexts.

In addition to its strong historic partnerships with the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse and the Toulouse – Jean Jaurès University, the isdaT forges close ties with the professional world of performing arts. This provides students with opportunities to work in prestigious groups and to be supervised by artists, musicians, dancers and choreographers : the Cité de la musique-Philharmonie de Paris, the Établissement Public du Capitole de Toulouse including the Opéra National and the Orchestre National, the Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse, the Conservatoire de Montauban, La Place de la Danse — CDCN Toulouse Occitanie, the RING — Scène Périphérique, the centre culturel Bellegarde, , as well as Le Metronum, Music’Halle school and their current music network…
