about
The École Supérieure d’Art et Design Le Havre-Rouen, combining the two art schools of Rouen and the Havre, has become, in fact, the largest art teaching establishment of the higher Normandy territory and also one of the more important cultural institutions of our region.
The ESADHaR proposes a wide range of artistic training through an ensemble of diverse propositions turning on two major axes: art and graphic design. The Rouen site is entirely devoted to the art department. It is located at the Aître Saint-Maclou and its immediate surroundings; the origins of this monument go back to the Black Death of 1348 that caused the deaths of a large part of the population necessitating the creation of a necropolis. The Havre site proposes two departments: art with the “espaces spécifiques” mention and Graphic design and Interactivity.
At the Havre, the « specific spaces/ espaces spécifiques » mention of the art department places the accent firmly on the relationship with territory. In Rouen, different workshops for research and creation push the students to take possession of sites in Rouen itself and in its surroundings.

research programmes
Edgar : Exposer le Design Graphique, Actes & Recherches
«Une saison graphique (A Graphic Season)» is an event bringing together exhibitions of the work of Graphic Designers in different places in the city of Havre. It seemed opportune to create a research group combining a number of teachers from the ESADHaR and the founding partners of the event. There are a number of objectives: to provoke and fuel contemporary graphic creation and accompany the invited graphic designers in the conception of their exhibitions, but also to question the practice of the graphic design exhibition, participating in an inventory of its current state, putting in place the intellectual and logistical tools that provide for its particular nature and considering the place of the city of Havre in he creation of these systems.
Édith – Edith researches, Edith publishes, Edith exhibits
Edith is a research laboratory set up by the ESADHaR in collaboration with the Cneai (The National Centre of Publishing and the Printed Arts) and the Haute Alsace University, Mulhouse. The team is made up of 13 artist researchers, graphic designers, art historians, a graphic design historian, a librarian, exhibition curators and screen-printers. Around fifteen older students also contribute to the Édith laboratory.
The purpose of the research is related to published works of art. Édith develops an inventory of publications by artists and graphic designers from the eighties to the present day. Geographically speaking, Édith pursues its research in Europe as well as in other countries, with specific and exemplary practices, by following a number of routes as opposed to territories. Step by step, Édith draws a path, modeled on the trade routes of the eighteenth century, elaborating a true atlas, with the goal of identifying different editorial forms of publications of authors.
From the start, the laboratory has closely associated theoretical and artistic research – a research that is as much on art as it is by art – this being considered as a fundamental specificity of a laboratory set up in an art school.
Idea – Interactivity, Design & Art
The programme has the goal of establishing a collection of works that focus on the specific question of using and learning digital tools for creation: programmed, generated, interactive graphic design, digital installations, online publications.
Le cabinet des écarts singuliers (The Cabinet of Singular Differences)
Since the end of the sixties contemporary art has seen the development of artistic attitudes looking to distance themselves from traditional spaces for creation and display. Working “beyond the walls” of the studio and the gallery, artists have experimented with the real through practices known as “contextual” and “on site”. The laboratory operates in the same vein, seeking to question the role of the on-site in current creation, to understand how this practice is evolving and the interactions that operate between the site, the work of art and the people connected to the sites.
The context of the Havre is particularly rich when it comes to urban change, historical trauma, specific geographical (the Seine estuary) and economic (the uninterrupted development of the port and its surroundings throughout the centuries, population movements) traits lend themselves perfectly to this research.
A number of axes of work are in operation within the laboratory: the wasteland and its industrial landscapes, Art/Nature/Heritage, art and its mediation.
Réseau DELAPEINTURE (The DELAPEINTURE network)
This research, centered on the contemporary issues and practices of painting, carried out by the Grenoble-Valence ESAD, was put together in 2010 with a 16 member research team; today, a dozen research and teaching organizations (1) in France and abroad continue to contribute to the development of this project, around the three initial issues:
– Painting: an object for considering the world. How does painting participate in the production of new codes, new specific models that take their place in our relationship with the contemporary world? In the tumult of pictorial practices and the connection with other art practices, what are the forms, processes and materials that painters use in the their current practice?
– Spaces and contexts of painting today. This second issue concerns the articulation between forms and context, and the strategies of painters in spaces of presentation and exhibition. It also questions the capacity of painting to continue the debate around the place of the spectator, starting from its inherent conditions.
– Local, global – the territories of painting. This issue questions the territory of painting on at least two levels; on a global level that is expressed in the constant flow of exchange, images and cultures; and on a local level which can be seen as much in the training provided by schools as in artistic circles. What is the role of artists, of their grouping in local scenes in a globalized context?
