Ecole européenne supérieure d’art de Bretagne | Lorient

about

The école européenne supérieure d’art de Bretagne (EESAB) – Brest, Lorient, Quimper, Rennes hosts around 900 students in four different sites. It proposes curricula in art, design and communication (Bac +3 and Bac +5, equivalent to a Master’s degree) in art, design and communication. A number of fields of artistic thought and expression establish the Lorient site project. First, regarding the contemporary narrative.

Contemporary narrative is characterized by the hybridization of genres, means and supports. Genders because it borrows as much from history, the novel, philosophy, essay, poetry, psychoanalysis, the human sciences, the documentary investigation, the reportage. Means because it uses texts, images, sounds, actions, choreographies, objects, environments to create what we should now call narrative experiences. Hybridization of the supports, finally, because the same story is displayed on different screens, on architecture, on paper or in the air.

The Art option will accommodate more personal approaches, built on the individual questions of the creator (who often, by joining collective questions, find an audience). In keeping with the pedagogical project, the art option emphasizes the contemporary practices of drawing, graphic arts, photography and video in a constant relationship to the spaces and places of the narrative.
The Communication option will welcome more creators who are intermediaries, who put their personal writing on the service of third-party projects. It is implemented in Lorient with particular support on graphic design and the creation of still, active and interactive images.

As an author, the artist exposes himself. As an actor, he / she is involved in the many fields of our society: the educational, the cultural, the social, the events, the institutional …

As far as the Communication option is concerned, teachers stimulate the students’ ability to adopt a binding exercise (techniques, subjects, formats, sponsors …), to respond to them by going beyond the initial order with a personal and relevant approach.

As far as the art option is concerned, pedagogy is less linked to external constraint and aims to develop a lasting autonomy in the production of artistic forms.

Jacques Bertin Project

The Graphic of Jacques Bertin – visual creation and human sciences at EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales)

The EHESS graphic laboratory, created in 1954 by Jacques Bertin, was a resource for all the researchers of this institution who were looking for visualizations and graphic proposals enabling them to speed up their research. The color, the line, the arrangement of signs in space were so many means, tools serving thought and the elaboration of knowledge. On the occasion of the program of actions set up by EHESS to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of Jacques Bertin’s Graphic Semiology (1967), EESAB Lorient wished to join in the celebration of this important event, dealing with the collaboration between humanities and visual research.

The experience of narrative

Contemporary narrative is characterized by the hybridization of genres, means and supports. Genders because it borrows as much from history, the novel, philosophy, essay, poetry, psychoanalysis, the human sciences, the documentary investigation, the reportage. Means because it uses texts, images, sounds, actions, choreographies, objects, environments to create what we should now call narrative experiences. Hybridization of the supports, finally, because the same story is displayed on different screens, on architecture, on paper or in the air.
Since 2012, EESAB has offered a seminar entitled “The Experience of Narrative”. Artists, theoreticians, art critics, exhibition curators come to present their practices, perceptions, experiments around the notion of narrative, which founds the project of establishment. Each episode of the study days is followed by the publication of a book by
different contributors (artists, theorists, teachers or art school students), whether or not they participated in the study days.

Tomorrow the ocean

BOAT ® is an artistic and educational research vessel conceived as a mobile workshop, a work platform, an annex of the Ecole supérieure supérieure d’art de Bretagne, meeting other territories, other cultures, other disciplines. This project was initiated by three EESAB teaching artists, Nicolas Floc’h, Erwan Mével and Jocelyn Cottencin, within the framework of the “territories extremes” research line.
Since November 2014, Nicolas Floc’h, Erwan Mével and Jocelyn Cottencin have started up with Pierre-Yves Glorennec and Jacques Dussol the renovation of the boat “Grand Largue”. Students from Brest, Lorient and Rennes were involved in the project. On the construction site, Nicolas Floc’h and Erwan Mevel coordinated the work, together with students from Rennes.
On the graphic project, Jocelyn Cottencin initiated a draft codex, chromatic, formal and typographical layout of the boat and its environment with students from Lorient.

TRAVEL AND TRIPS
The school organizes regular trips or study trips for students (Venice Art Biennale, Documenta in Kassel). Every year, during the first semester, a trip to Paris is offered to students of the 1st year, with a program of visits (museums, art centers, galleries, etc.)

SEMINARS AND DAYS OF STUDIES
The teaching team of the Lorient site offers seminars or study days, with the participation of external guests (artists, teachers, researchers from all disciplines):
× Either on joint projects with other EESAB sites.
× Either in connection with the project to set up the Lorient site. Every year since 2012, the study days “L’expérience du récit” are an opportunity to invite theorists and artists to share their experiments or analyzes around this notion of narrative, the foundation of the pedagogical project. These days give rise to an eponymous annual publication.

EXHIBITIONS
The gallery of the school hosts on average 3 exhibitions per year. Artists, collectives or gallery owners, in conjunction with the teachers, propose a selection of works and travel to meet the students, to animate a conference or a workshop related to the exhibition. This program includes exhibitions linked to the biennals organized in the Lorient conurbation, the “Rencontres photographiques” and the “Itineraires graphiques” co-founded by the school.
The school encourages partnerships to allow students to expose as much as possible outside the walls.
