In January of 2011, ÉSAL was founded following the merger of the École de l’Image d’Épinal and the École Supérieure d’Art de Metz Métropole. In January 2014, the school opened its training centre for teachers of music and dance. ÉSAL is a multi-site institution offering training programmes in visual arts, music and dance open to multidisciplinary practices and experiences.
The school contains around 300 students in 3 different sites. It proposes curricula in 5 state-certified training programmes :
- Art option, specialization: exploring artistic devices, Metz
- Communication option, specialization: graphic arts & languages, Metz
- Artistic Design option, specialization: images & narratives, Épinal
- Music, all fields, Metz
- Dance, classical, jazz & contemporary, Metz
The school’s multidisciplinary approach enriches its training at each site, while its cross-disciplinary workshops allow for fertile exchanges within numerous fields of contemporary art and the performing arts. Research training is also a common denominator.
The visual arts center in Metz covers 3 000 m2 and is situated in the heart of Metz between two institutions of major artistic importance: The Metz Pompidou Centre and the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain (Frac Lorraine). Situated in a privileged access to European space, crossing national frontiers confers a particular status on the school offering further cultural opportunities due to its geographical positionclose to Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg – known as the territory of “La Grande Region”.
This rich environment is concerned with the directing and circulating of images, the notions of artistic devices, and graphic and narrative systems. Backed up by permanent workshops (a film studio, mixed media workshops, edition, photography, video, print making studios, wood and metal workshops) and important resources in the fields of multimedia, ofinteractivity, of sound and specialization, of edition, photography andtraditional media (etching, drawing, painting…) students find here theconditions of development for personal research projects.
The Ésal is the only school of art in further education having connections with an exceptional Centre of art dedicated on a European level to modern and contemporary art. In terms of synergy the construction of the Pompidou Centre in Metz has a highly favorable incidence on its teaching project. The Centre allows the Ésal to take advantage of exceptional resources, be they documentary or related to events. It also associates students and teachers in the setting up of experimental projects.The concept of a studio of creation, especially, allows for the development of collaborations where the creating of hybrid images, associating sound andmovement provokes questioning about scenography and the whole spectrum of setting up, from photographic to film sets, exhibition and theatre design.

GAIA workshops : Governance Architecture Engineering Administration
Gouvernance Architecture Ingénierie Administration (GAIA) brings together the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture (ÉNSA) in Nancy, the École Européenne d’Ingénieur-es en Génie des Matériaux (ÉEIGM) in Nancy, the École Nationale Supérieure en Génie des Systèmes et de l’Innovation (ÉNSGSI) in Nancy and the École Supérieure d’Art de Lorraine (ÉSAL) in Metz.
For the past four years, the ÉSAL Electrical Research and Creation Workshop has been part of the GAIA workshops. It is carrying out research into the reinvention of a place; reflecting on the relationship between users and space and time; studying and inventing ways of listening, moving around, stopping, etc. Passages, circulations, interstices, rhizomes, movements: he explores ways of inhabiting and constructing sensitive environments.
The GAIA workshops, which have been running for over 20 years, are distinguished by their research into the reinvention of a place. In this pedagogical format, students reflect on the relationship between users and space and time, studying and inventing ways of listening, moving around and stopping. Working as part of a team with a wide range of backgrounds, they explore ways of living in and building sensitive environments, with the aim of gaining experience in operational multidisciplinarity.
Page Institute (text — space — edition)
The Page Institute is constructed as a laboratory for textual, graphic, and editorial research. It unfolds in various forms: a research program, two seminars, two workshops for research and creation — ARC, workshops and workgroups (see Student Handbook — course outlines A4, A5). The Page Institute is interested in the production of content arising from discussions and conferences organized at the school; in the design of textual and editorial graphic forms based on different corpora from all the workshops; in taking into account technical and economic constraints; in defining audiences and publishing. The institute reports on its activities through printed or online editions.

Research in the sound
Founded in 2009, L.A.R.S provides a context in which to develop sound projects (methodology and implementation). Éléonore Bak, artist, doctor of architecture and associate researcher at the CRESSON/ÉNSAG laboratory (Centre de Recherche sur l’Espace Sonore et l’Environnement Urbain, École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble) gives a specific flavour to the research. She relies on specialist scientific partnerships to establish sound ‘as a plastic and construction material’ for natural and artificial environments.
The dissertation committee
The dissertation committee – part of the ÉSAL ‘Institut Page’ laboratory – is a genuine student editorial committee working in a professional way. The Comité mémoire undertakes actions to disseminate, promote and enhance research at ÉSAL by publishing a selection of dissertations by graduates of the school.
Since its creation in 2020, the Memory Committee has produced three graduate publications.
The Messine – typography

As an extension of the Typography workshop, an introduction to type design research has been offered since 2011 in the form of occasional workshops in partnership with the Argentinian foundry PampaType. This seminar is designed as a cross-generational group project. It focuses on the design of typefaces that can withstand the demands of long reading, and on tailor-made designs to meet specific needs (sizes, media, functions) and contribute to the school’s graphic identity.
Writing in Action study days
At ÉSAL, the text is conceived as much as possible as a complete artistic gesture, in more or less direct, or even oblique, dialogue with a plastic production and a network of intellectual interests. It can therefore take a multitude of forms; autobiographical narratives, fictions, or reflections on contemporary art. To help students grasp the editorial stakes, Institut Page — a laboratory for textual, graphic, and editorial research at ÉSAL — has been implementing various educational formats since 2018: seminars, research programs, workshops, conferences, editorial committees…Following several study days, during which artists, graphic designers, authors, editors, and researchers came to present their work, ÉSAL continues its research field around publishing, text in all its forms, and writing.

Hands-on art workshops – public courses
ESAL hosts art workshops on weekdays. These convivial workshops are open to everyone, from begining to experienced artists, and are led by artist-teachers or professional instructors.
international cooperation
Numerous international exchange initiatives, which are a priority for the school, through the Erasmus network. The elaboration of politics for international exchanges is one of the priorities of the Ésal which disposes of Erasmus agreements in ten European countries.
Foreign students from outside the European Union
Foreign applicants residing abroad and graduates from countries outside the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) must apply via the portal CampusArt and submit their application to the equivalency committee (admissions only via the Metz Visual Arts website).

Foreign students from the EU who would like to complete an entire ÉSAL course programme may integrate the school in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th academic year. Just like French students, they must take the competitive entrance exam and submit their application to the equivalency committee. Otherwise, for a shorter period, students may
request a study mobility via their own institution.

specific equipment
Spanning over 3,000 m², ÉSAL Metz is structured around workshops, laboratories, multimedia resources, and spatialization facilities. In addition to the auditorium and cinema projection room, the school now features three new educational spaces dedicated to photography, publishing, and moving images.
In 2023/2024, ÉSAL installed an elevator to improve access to workshops for people with reduced mobility.
PAN Photo – Analog and Digital Photography Hub
For many years, ÉSAL has been offering both analog and digital photography education. With the PAN Photo space, students benefit from a comprehensive approach to photographic development and printing – from the initial shot to the final print. Transversal and open to both Art and Communication options, PAN Photo is designed as a multifunctional and diagonal workspace. The new analog color printing facility is a unique feature among art schools in the Grand Est region.
EDIT*ON – Editorial Creation Space
Publishing is a core part of the school’s identity, particularly through a pedagogy driven by writing. The editorial program focuses on acquiring practical skills in visual culture and design creation. The school encourages students’ creative engagement in all practices, emphasizing publishing, printmaking, typography, and graphic design. EDIT*ON combines several functionalities into one space: a FabLab, a printing area, a cutting space, and a bookbinding workshop.
DUPLEX – Space for Video and Sound Production
DUPLEX is a flexible space dedicated to the practice of moving images through various approaches.
Designed to be a hub for audiovisual creation, experimentation, production, exhibition, and dissemination, it stands at the crossroads of artistic practices:
Photo and sound recording studio
Control room for audio and video recording
Live streaming and direct manipulation
VJing space
Live audio-visual performances and staging
Installation and spatial arrangement of moving images (from screen to immersive space)
Black-box space for exhibiting moving images
Wood and Metal Workshops, complemented by the FabLab at Bliiida
ÉSAL and Bliiida, a third place of inspiration, innovation, and collective intelligence, have partnered to provide students with access to specific equipment and expertise in digital fabrication. In addition to a local woodworking workshop, this long-term partnership integrates training and professional development. The teachings, which support students’ projects, are enriched by access to high-performance technical equipment, training on computer-controlled machines and tools, and guidance from the FabLab MIDO technicians.
Each year, Bliiida also supports a graduate with the “Coup de cœur Bliiida” award.
