EuroFabrique Camps: a project led by ANdEA supported by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme

ANdÉA and its three partners – the Cerveira Art Biennial in Portugal, the Transylvania Creative Industries Cluster in Cluj-Napoca and Le Signe, centre national du graphisme in Chaumont – have obtained financial support from the Europe Créative programme in 2023 to formalise the transformation of EuroFabrique into a label that can be adopted by any network of European art schools.

The project summary

How can Europe’s creative youth prepare themselves to navigate the upheavals of the world and an increasingly uncertain future, particularly after the COVID-19 crisis and amidst a new war at EU borders? How can educational and cultural institutions empower them with the necessary resources to take action, express their creativity, and share their visions for a renewed society, and doing so help restore confidence in a desirable common future, foster social innovation and participate in a dynamic of resilience?

EuroFabrique is a nomadic international programme launched in 2022 by ANdÉA – French National Association of Higher Schools of Art and Design, RmnGrandPalais and the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs Paris. It regularly brings together students from European art schools with the aim of exploring and creating together forms representing the European continent and producing new creative narratives. The first edition in Paris at the Grand Palais Éphémère, was followed by a second EuroFabrique event in Cluj-Napoca in Romania in 2023.

Transforming EuroFabrique energy into a long-term project is now a significant challenge. In order to support the structuring of EuroFabrique into a system that can be adapted to any network of European art schools, ANdÉA together with it’s three consortium partners the Cerveira Art Biennial in Portugal, the Transylvania Creative Industries Cluster in Cluj-Napoca and Le Signe, Centre National du Graphisme in Chaumont, have obtained financial support of the Creative Europe programme in 2023 to co-organise three EuroFabrique Camps over 16 months. They represent a diversity of organizations mobilized on the trajectories of emerging artists and designers, have decided to join forces at European level to shape together the futures of EuroFabrique while consolidating an inclusive cross-border network. These collaborative capsules are designed to test new cooperation prototypes and to reflect on the future actors, structures, forms and content of EuroFabrique while continuing to activate the same collaborative method and actively engaging European creative youth, facilitating their international mobility and building their creative and critical skills and resilience capacities. Ultimately, the aim is to raise awareness about the role of artists and designers as drivers for social, political, economic, and cultural development and social resilience and participating in a more inclusive and tolerant society.

Project results

The EuroFabrique ThinkCamp took place in Cluj, Romania, from 6 to 8 December 2023 to work collectively on redefining the EuroFabrique concept, exploring its possible formats and transmission methods, while 170 students and professors from 19 art schools in 9 European countries experienced the second edition of EuroFabrique. The outcome of this first Camp is the EuroFabrique Label Guide.

The EuroFabrique DesignCamp, which was held in France at Signe, centre national du graphisme, from 5 to 9 February 2024, brought together 42 graphic design students and professors from 10 art schools in 7 European countries. The participants took up the challenge of co-designing  a visual identity toolbox from which future hosts of EuroFabrique events could draw to create their own identity, one that fits in with a shared EuroFabrique identity.

The EuroFabrique ArtCamp is scheduled for 21-28 September 2024 in Portugal, as part of the XXIIIrd Cerveira International Art Biennial. 33 students from 11 art schools from 7 European countries will come together to work on a curatorial manifesto linked to the major issues facing the continent.

The development of a website, currently underway, will give larger visibility of proposals and visions emerging from the project.
